Call for Applications: WCGE will award one doctoral scholarship

In the Doctoral Program “Ethics and Responsible Leadership in Business” (ERL), the WCGE will award one doctoral scholarship for the intake in October 2017.

Scholarship for the Doctoral Program “Ethics and Responsible Leadership in Business”

The Wittenberg Center for Global Ethics (WCGE) is proud to host the Doctoral Program “Ethics and Responsible Leadership in Business” (ERL). In the 2017 application round, the program will award one doctoral scholarship in cooperation with the Weltethos-Institut Tübingen (WEIT) and the Karl Schlecht Stiftung (KSG).

The Weltethos-Institut is an intercultural dialogue platform at the University of Tübingen. Central to the Weltethos-Institute’s mandate is the promotion of globally responsible, prudent, and innovative business practices among international economic and political leaders. In its research and teaching, the Institute builds on the intercultural legacy of its founder, the theologian Hans Küng, with the goal of developing and promoting a common ‘world ethos’ for 21st-century globalized business and society.

The doctoral program is designed for exceptionally talented and motivated graduate students whose research interests relate to responsible leadership in a global business context. The program promotes research that offers feasible strategies for doing business responsibly in the competitive global marketplace. Proposals should ideally make contributions to the academic discourse on the idea of a ‘world ethos for business’ set in motion by Weltethos founder Hans Küng.

Study program

The successful candidate will, together with her fellow WCGE stipend-holders, participate in a comprehensive program of coursework and field projects based at the WCGE’s Wittenberg campus. Living in cities within reach of Wittenberg for the first two years is therefore a prerequisite for admission. Additionally, the ‘Weltethos’ stipend-holder is expected to present her dissertation work annually in Tübingen and, where relevant to her research interests, to participate in further Weltethos Institut conferences and public events.

Admission and sponsoring

Admission to the doctoral program requires that students are supervised by Prof. Dr. Andreas Suchanek, Dr. Werner Jackstädt Chair of Economic and Business Ethics, Leipzig Graduate School of Management (first supervisor) and Prof. Dr. Claus Dierksmeier, Academic Director of the WEIT and Professor for Globalization and Economic Ethics at the University of Tübingen (second supervisor). Applicants should familiarize themselves with the research interests of both supervisors and propose a dissertation project that resonates with these and with the overall focus of the doctoral program while also concentrating on the role of a ‘world ethos for global business’. Candidates must hold an above-average masters or diploma degree in a field that is relevant for their individual research proposal.

Applications should include:

  • A short outline describing the research proposal (max. 5 pages)
  • A letter of motivation (max. 2 pages)
  • At least one letter of reference
  • A university certificate which fulfills the conditions for obtaining a PhD at HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management (incl. transcript of records)
  • If applicable, certificates of employment and a publication list
  • A CV

The program’s academic committee will, in consultation with the Weltethos Institut, make the final decision regarding acceptance to the doctoral program. The scholarship will begin after admission to the doctoral program at Leipzig Graduate School of Management, preferably in October 2017. The monthly stipend rate will be 1.350 Euros, including material and travel costs. The scholarship can be granted for up to three years, depending on the progress of the dissertation project and the completion of the requirements in the study and practical program, which will be assessed on an annual basis. It is expected that the dissertation project will be completed within the proposed three-year period. Further information can be found on www.ethicsinbusiness.eu and http://www.weltethos-institut.org/en/institute/. Applications close on 31st August 2017.
