Short Abstract
In business ethics, moral judgment deals with the question of responsible action, although moral judgment does not yet describe the ability to act responsibly; only each individual can use his or her freedom responsibly. Nevertheless, it is possible and desirable to promote this ability. This is especially true for managers who serve as role models in their organizations. In management development, responsible action can be a concrete topic of internal training processes in organizations.
Coaching is increasingly used for management development and internal training processes. As a separate measure, coaching can initiate comprehensive personal support and be used to improve the transfer of other measures - e.g., training. In the theory and practice of coaching, there is agreement that coaching must address ethical issues. Coaching can provide a free space in which ethically relevant aspects of the open questions can be collectively reflected upon. For the collective reflection of ethical questions orientations are nevertheless necessary. The recently developed Ethical Compass could provide such orientation aid.
This doctoral project aims to investigate existing coaching programs in companies as possible fields of application for the Ethical Compass and thus contribute to the discussion on ethical orientations for management coaching programs.
In ten selected companies, qualitative individual interviews will be conducted and evaluated with the method of qualitative content analysis. The aim is to analyse how coaching programs are designed and to what extent the promotion of ethical behaviour is a component of these programs. The results of this analysis will be fed back to individuals responsible for coaching programs, coaches and coaches. Fostered by the reflection of those involved, insights into their experiences, attitudes and assessments are to be gained. Subsequently, it will be analysed to what extent the Ethical Compass can be an orientation aid for management coaching programs and to what extent the Purpose of the company should be taken into account. Selected concepts from the field of business ethics, the concept of the Ethical Compass and the Leipzig Leadership Model form the theoretical-conceptual basis of the research project.
